African development Bank is back with a second online competition contest for only African designers. For the lucky winner of Africa’s sustainable and circular fashion, in addition to the 60,000 UDS cash prize, other benefits like mentorship, branding packages and other support tools will be given.
In collaboration with United Nations Environment Programme, Parsons School of Design, strategic consulting and communications agency BPCM, and the Ellen MacArthur Foundation the online competition, only for African Fashion designers is intended for the advancement of sustainable fashion. Entrants must be pursuing environmentally friendly measures, sustainability, and circular economy actions to qualify. The designer or design team submitting the “best sustainable design” will win $3,000 along with other prizes. Two other competition finalists will take home $1,500 each, plus other support packages.
The main purpose of the competition is to highlight the continent’s talented and audacious entrepreneurs who are disrupting the fashion world by placing sustainability at the heart of their design and production. This initiative comes to help Africa slow down on the fast rising increase of carbon emission, from our fashion industries. According to UNEP, manufacturing only one pair of jeans costs mother nature 3,781 liters of water, from the production of cotton to the delivery of the final product to the store.
Amel Hamza, the Acting Director for Gender, Women and Civil Society at the African Development Bank says; “With the second edition of the Fashionomics Africa contest, the Bank aims to continue highlighting the ingenuity that African fashion designers consistently demonstrate through the strength of their culture and heritage.”
