Two Powerful Women Reflect on Hosting One Big Show, The ASFAs

Vimbai Mutinhiri and Deedan Muyira on hosting the ASFAs 2019

Having a successful show is barely about how much money you throw in, although we must agree, having a solid budget is always necessary for any event to flow as planned. And among the other things that you have to focus on, is having an excellent host(s).

When Deedan received a phone call from Talent Africa on hosting the awards, her immediate response was Oyaa!!! But of course! “I had wanted to be on that stage for years!” she tells ASFAs News. Being a reknown media personality, whose charm and charisma easily seeps through when she holds a microphone. Her presence could be described as a euphoria of all feelings, but mostly the happy emotions, and no one knows better about this than her co-host Vimbai “I love her bubbly personality. She can make anyone smile” Vimbai says, adding “Deedan is the perfect combination of business and pleasure – a consummate professional who gets the job done while having a fantastic time! There are no dull moments with her.

“Calm and collected” are the words Deedan uses to describe her co-host Vimbai. “It was so awesome hosting with her” she says, adding “she is professional, very articulate plus eager to learn new ways of connecting with the crowd.  Finally, very easy to get along with.”  she explains.

Before hosting the Award show together, this powerful duo had never met, not until the day before the Abryanz Style and Fashion Awards 2019, and now they have moved on to being close acquaintances whose relationship is challenged by only time and space. “We Keep in touch once in a while, just to say hey… or in my case to congratulate her on her baby” Deedan says, when I ask her about their relationship now.

The Abryanz Style and Fashion Awards gather an audience of 20,000+ attendees, different acts, from performances, to fashion showcases, award giving and acceptance speeches grace the annual event. Such a show does not seamlessly flow, especially with two hosts that have never worked together ⏤but with Deedan and Vimbai, it was connection at first sight. According to Vimbai, hosting with Deedan is effortless “She simply gets it. We were able to be spontaneous and flow naturally because she is so confident in her work and extremely well prepared,” she adds.

About Vimbai

Vimbai Mutinhiri is a queen of day television, an actress and model who has been on screen since age 15. She is also a great lover of well architectured clothing and fitting dresses and all colours as testified her spontaneous outfits while hosting the 2019 Awards show. She has hosted other numerous shows all over Africa like Big Brother, Africa Magic Viewers Choice Awards, among many other television shows. Her hosting for the ASFAs, especially along with Deedan was a very brilliant idea. The two have an energy that can be felt from far off, an energy that fills a big room full of seemingly fancy people.

On wondering why the ASFAs fascinated her, Deedan lets me in on her unmistakable love for African Fashion and Entertainment, and how the Abryanz Style and Fashion Awards brought these 2 together for her. Adding to that, she says; “The ASFAs have made us appreciate our local designers even more, the event has become the ‘mall of African designers’ who want to be known by the rest of Africa, and the world” she says.

Hosting ASFAs for me was different from other shows. A majority of the shows or events I have hosted are targeted for the Ugandan market or a specific company. This one is for African fashion lovers, entrepreneur and designers from all over Africa. I am well aware that the ASFAs are followed by many people in Africa and beyond, and having your name as one of its hosts brings a certain level of angst, Deedan says.

Deedan prep routine

To prep herself, Deedan checks out past events prior to the upcoming event and digs into a little history about the event or the company, “I ask questions during the meetings prior to the event or in some cases we do rehearsals. On the day of the event, we fine tune program as I plan on how I or we will open the show” she shares.

If you hope to host the ASFA’s one day, Deedan has wise words for you, words that she clearly won’t let me call advice; “Understand or know the audience in attendance, coordinate with your co-host, then please have a good time while entertaining Africa.”

Vimbai Mutinhiri and Deedan Muyira gave us a show worth attending, sometimes ⏤they forgot about us, and made jokes like twin sisters, ⏤jokes that we also laughed about. And other times they quizzed us, tickled us, wowed us and bragged a little bit with their fascinating outfits. All in all, we had a great time with this duo, and can’t wait to see how far they go individually and together again.
